Basildon Town Centre (Thanks to Miriam Heppell for the use of this image)
The woodsman has gone, to be replaced by the old clock, hardly state of the art design and technology, amidst a field of purple-sprouting street lights. Then there's the CCTV cameras placed on high to register our every move across the town square. The surveillance society has well and truly come to Basildon. Of course CCTV is useful as a specific security measure in specific locations, but as a general continuous survey of us all ? Somehow it seems spooky.
