At last Basildon Council is beginning to connect again with the local arts community. Basildon Arts Collective has got off to a flying start with meetings of interested parties from different sectors of the arts community, officers - you actually do need officers - and meetings with councillors and council officers. It's many years since the council took the arts in general seriously, and even in the past it was fairly half-hearted except for the vision of a few people. There be lots wrong with the way the Towngate theatre was built, but at least somebody had the vision and the aspiration to say Basildon should have a theatre. Nobody expects huge cash handouts in this day and age - though it would be good to have even a fraction of the money given over to the Sporting Village - but recognition of the value of the arts, visual and performing, will be one small step.

Then there's the CCTV cameras placed on high to register our every move across the town square. The surveillance society has well and truly come to Basildon. Of course CCTV is useful as a specific security measure in specific locations, but as a general continuous survey of us all ? Somehow it seems spooky.

Basildon's favourite muppet, Old Man Stan, has certainly upset administration members at Basildon Council, with his celebration of 2009 Bazza Christmas and his comments on proposals for Basildon Golf Course. Particularly peeved was the portfolio holder for Leisure and the Arts who has recently been highlighted in the local press for his regret that local people have used democratic procedures to try and overturn development proposals for the golf course. Such arrogance is not uncommon with council administrations whose paternalistic and centralist approach leads them to believe that, of course, they know best what the people want and are happy to completely disregard public opinion.
